New AGU climate statement coming
Friday January 18, 2008
Next week, on 24 January to be precise, the American Geophysical Union will update its official statement on climate change. The current statement was ratified in December 2003. Most of it is no more or less true today than it was four years ago, but these specific, confident predictions in the 2003 statement are likely to expand:
Mid-continent warming will be greater than over the oceans, and there will be greater warming at higher latitudes. Some polar and glacial ice will melt, and the oceans will warm; both effects will contribute to higher sea levels. The hydrologic cycle will change and intensify, leading to changes in water supply as well as flood and drought patterns. There will be considerable regional variations in the resulting impacts. The threat of ocean acidification has gained prominence since 2003 and is sure to be mentioned. Any other predictions?
