7.7 quake in northern Chile

chile earthquakeEarly this afternoon local time, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck northern Chile near its widest point. It was a typical subduction-related thrust event, about 60 kilometers deep. A 7-centimeter tsunami was recorded locally, and all warnings have ended. See the scientific details at the US Geological Survey's event page for this quake.
