San Andreas fault, mid-Peninsula segment
Friday October 5, 2007
After attending the press conference yesterday where the rock cores from the San Andreas fault were shown, I had to drive up into the hills and visit the fault itself. Fortunately for me, Stanford University is rather close to the fault. (It has been unfortunate for Stanford, which suffered massive damage in 1906 and expensive damage in 1989.) Not only was that a fitting thing to do, but that particular locality is one I hadn't seen before before, AND it filled a gap in my photo gallery of the fault. See the five new photos, all labeled "Los Trancos Ridge," where the Los Trancos Open Space Preserve features an earthquake trail that winds along the trace of the 1906 rupture.I felt no shaking up there. The fault has been mostly quiet since 1906.
