City of crooked streets

Wednesday September 26, 2007
fault creepSuch is Hayward, California, which gave its name to the Hayward fault. I was there this morning to scope out a walking tour I'm giving this weekend and took this photo. It really should be called the Oakland fault, because that's the biggest city on it, but Hayward's stretch of the fault is special. It warps streets right in the heart of old downtown, worming between old buildings, and nobody takes note of it. It's like a sleeping, buried dragon.
