Five Great Books and One Bad One

This week's hoopla for the 1906 San Francisco earthquake centennial may whet your appetite for some good books. I have five to recommend and one to not. That one has been very popular, best-selling, and so on, but it's a poor choice for anything except its big foldout dust jacket, a showpiece of the bookmaker's art.
