New Rock Closeups

Monday October 10, 2005
You may have browsed the Wallpaper Gallery and lingered over the free 1024x768 pictures of rock closeups, but clicked away regretfully because there were no blue rocks. Well, come back and see, because yesterday I visited some of the world's bluest rocks, in the classic blueschist locality of Ward Creek in northern California. This picture shows metamorphosed basalt, squeezed deep in the Earth until its minerals changed to mostly glaucophane. Now your desktop can be BLUE.
