Moderate quake strikes far east L.A.

Thursday June 16, 2005
A magnitude 4.9 earthquake (downgraded from 5.3) occurred near Yucaipa at 1:53 pm local time, causing little reported damage. It was an oblique thrust event in a region just outside the Los Angeles urban area where the San Andreas fault zone is frayed into several different strands. Aftershocks are tightly clustered in the epicentral area, unlike Sunday's magnitude 5.2 quake a bit farther south. Here's the map of the area with current seismicity, from the USGS.
