Today in History: Gold Found At Sutter's Mill

On this day in 1848, in the Sierra foothills of northern California, James Marshall found flecks of gold in the millrace he was building for John Sutter. The State Parks office recounts the tale and what came of it: the great Gold Rush. What it doesn't mention is that America was primed for gold rushes, having been through several before 1848.
