7.0 quake in Hokkaido; no tsunami

Early Monday morning local time, a magnitude-7 earthquake struck just off the eastern tip of Japan's northern island Hokkaido. It was a typical subduction-related thrust event, some 43 kilometers deep. Follow the news and specs on this USGS page. No tsunami threat is forecast.

This area is in one of Japan's most hazardous areas, according to the seismic hazard map of the country.
