Sunset quake strikes Japan

Saturday October 23, 2004
A large earthquake, magnitude 6.9, struck the west coast of Japan, mainly in Niigata prefecture, just before 6 pm local time today. See the USGS page for this event, which includes links to news stories. At least 10 deaths have been documented, plus widespread damage. Local intensity reached 6 on the 7-point Japanese scale.
