Terraces everywhere

Tuesday October 12, 2004
I just got back from a road trip to Southern California, and it seems like I saw terraces all the time--besides mountains and beaches, of course. But Santa Monica, for instance, sits on several levels of terraces raised above the sea by tectonic uplift. (See these terrace remnants in Santa Cruz and Sonoma County while I'm processing my photos.) There were also river terraces in the lovely country northeast of San Luis Obispo, marking the beds of ancient lakes (like this example from Hollister).
