Seismic background noise: sea waves?

Sid Perkins in Science News reports on a new theory about the low, steady rumbling seismometers hear even when there are no earthquakes. Previous explanations involved movements of the air against mountain ranges and similar obscure forces. But a new analysis links the background seismicity to strong winter storms that raise high ocean waves. Read the rest.
