25 days to go

Wednesday August 11, 2004
Back in January, a UCLA team announced an experimental earthquake forecast: before the fifth of September, a magnitude 6.5 or larger event will strike in a region including the southeastern Mojave Desert and the area to its south. The team's method is called "reverse tracing of precursors" or RTP in a preprint of their paper for Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors. Remember that there's no reason to think the likelihood of a quake will grow as the forecast period elapses. But if such an earthquake happens, it will be a scientific sensation.

Keep an eye on the area here, or explore other news sources in the current earthquakes list.
