Solons Fret About Typic Dystrudrept
Monday May 24, 2004
Yes, when the Pennsylvania legislature is asked to establish an official State Soil for Pennsylvania, it's no wonder the senators get antsy. I would too--soil classification is even more abstruse than igneous petrology or microfossil stratigraphy. The candidate soil, called Hazleton, is an upland sandstone-based loam classed as a Typic Dystrudrept. State representative Kelly Lewis couldn't care less. He told the Associated Press, "Enough is enough. . . . My people didn't elect me to worry about that stuff." But civilization rests upon soils, which is why I've put together a whole category dedicated to the subject that includes all 52 state soils.
