Mars on Earth

Perhaps the most Mars-like place on Earth is Chile's Atacama Desert. A fine article in the new Wired is a first-person report from a research expedition to this extremely dry region, where nothing lives except a few elusive microbes. I like the desert as much as anyone, but this desert is truly scary.
