Colorado Marble

Tuesday February 17, 2004
You have probably seen Colorado marble, specifically the Yule Marble, a high-quality white stone used in the Lincoln Memorial, many other buildings, and sculpture. (The state Geological Survey has just made a (Netscape-unfriendly) slide show with excellent detail.) A local Girl Scout troop, following a suggestion from their science advisor Clare Marshall, started an avalanche of political activity by lobbying the state government to name Yule Marble the state rock. It would join red rhodochrosite (state mineral) and blue aquamarine (state gem) in a patriotic troika. Final legislative action could happen this week--follow the news at this link.
