The problem of mountains

Mountains are lovely to look upon, heaven to touch. But the more the old-time geologists thought about them, the more vexing mountains were: If Earth is billions of years old, why aren't the mountains all worn down to molehills? Here's a look at how our view of mountains changed between 1900 and 2000.
