Fossil Park Open for Summer

By June 24, 2003

Follow me on:

The free fossil-hunting park in Sylvania, Ohio is open for the season. Fossil-bearing rock from the quarry next door is dumped in a pit for all comers. People can take home anything they find. Next time you're near Toledo, get me one. Maybe I can try some of my own advice on getting fossils out of the rock.

This modest post was the first one I ever posted on About.com when it adopted WordPress. It is the oldest geology blog post on the web. There were a few earlier efforts, but they didn’t last and do not survive.

I’ve left the links alone, but today I can point you straight to the Fossil Park website instead of Yahoo Maps. Fossil Park is just one of over a dozen public parks that allow fossil collecting.

I should clarify: mine may not have been the first blog devoted entirely to geology. But none of those that started earlier continues today.
